WASHINGTON, DC, US, March 8, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Washington, March 8, 2018 -- The Representative in the United States for the National Council of Resistance of Iran, Ms. Soona Samsami, urged the U.S. Government to designate Iranian regime officials involved in human rights violations.

Since the beginning of the uprising on December 28, 2017, at many as 8,000 protesters have been arrested and over 50 killed, including at least 14 tortured to death.

The officials responsible for the atrocities have a long history of rights violations, including the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, mostly members of the main Iranian opposition, the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK/PMOI).

The Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown during the uprising warrants a response from the United States as outlined in U.S. law.

Those who warrant designation by the U.S. Government for being responsible for human rights abuses, include, but are not limited to, the following individuals:

In July 2017, President Trump signed into law an Act that called for the “Imposition of additional sanctions with respect to persons responsible for human rights abuses,” and that such sanctions would extend to “those responsible for extrajudicial killings, torture, or other gross violations of internationally recognized human rights committed against individuals in Iran” who seek “(A) to expose illegal activity carried out by officials of the Government of Iran; or (B) to obtain, exercise, defend, or promote internationally recognized human rights and freedoms, such as the freedoms of religion, expression, association, and assembly…”
