2003 The football world was in mourning following the death of Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe who collapsed during the Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon. He was the first footballer to die during an official tournament and the first to die in a full international since Nigeria’s Samuel Okwaraji collapsed on the pitch in a World Cup qualifier against Angola in 1989.

French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin paid tribute to the 28-year-old midfielder. Foe, who played in the tough English Premiership for Manchester City last season, was stretchered from the field after he collapsed while alone in the centre of the pitch. Cameroon’s 1-0 win in the semi-final was their fourth match since June 19. But Foe had played only 153 minutes of a possible 270. Lyon has been in the midst of a heat wave, with temperatures soaring into the 30s and peaking at 37celsius during recent afternoons.
