Peru's PM: Mario Vargas Llosa's work transcends and will serve as an example to youth

Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen highlighted the figure of Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, who passed away at the age of 89 last Sunday, as well as his legacy for posterity.

The Cabinet chief stated that the writer born in the southern city of Arequipa is a universal Peruvian, as recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy and the French Academy.

"We are aware that the body departs, but the work remains -a work that transcends Vargas Llosa’s personality here on Earth and will extend through future generations, serving as an example, as an inspiration, so that young people may see who Vargas Llosa was and what his work was," he told RPP Noticias on Monday.

Adrianzen emphasized that the acclaimed novelist was a defender of freedom, "the freedom that, precisely, characterizes man in his purest essence."

National mourning decree

The Prime Minister indicated that President Dina Boluarte made contact with the family of Mario Vargas Llosa immediately after the news of his passing was announced.

He specified that, in strict coordination with them, a supreme decree was issued last night declaring national mourning this Monday, April 14.

The Cabinet chief stressed that the regulation orders the national flag to be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect and mourning for his passing, both in public offices and on ships, military bases, among others, in tribute to the man who in life was our Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature.

Adrianzen also stated that the government fully respects the will of the author of 'The Time of the Hero' with respect to there being no public ceremony held to bid him farewell.

Mario Vargas Llosa, 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature, passed away in the city of Lima at the age of 89 last Sunday "in peace and surrounded by his family," according to his grown-up children Alvaro, Morgana, and Gonzalo.
